CONSERVATION TIPS FOR PAPER WORKS
When purchasing works of art on paper, it is essential to follow certain steps to ensure their longevity and maintain the original quality. Here are some guidelines for preserving and displaying works of paper art effectively:
– Proper Framing: Make sure the art does not directly touch the glass as this may affect its original qualities. Use a frosted board that is at least 1 to 2 mm thick in traditional frames to prevent the artwork from coming into contact with the glass. Alternatively, opt for a box frame to create a safe distance between the artwork and the glass.
– Use of Materials: Choose acid-free, pH-neutral papers and adhesives for any materials that come into contact with the artwork. Acidic materials can deteriorate paper over time, causing stains or yellowing.
– Support materials: Avoid using MDF as a support material, as it can absorb moisture and promote the growth of mold, which can stain the artwork. Foam board is the best option, being lighter and usually covered with paper or plastic on both sides, with a hard foam core.
– Glass Selection:Avoid using standard anti-reflective glass, which has a texture that can obscure the details of the artwork.
– Lighting Conditions: Keep art out of direct sunlight to prevent colors from fading. Use specialized lighting, such as LED bulbs, which do not emit harmful UV or infrared rays and have low heat production.
– Handling precautions: Always handle the work of art with fabric gloves to protect it from skin oil and sweat, which can cause stains. If you do not have gloves at the moment, wash your hands with soap, removing as much oil as possible, and dry your hands on a clean, dry towel. Make sure your hands are clean and dry before touching the paper.
– Storage Recommendations:Store artwork in a dark, dry place if it needs to be archived. Proper storage conditions are essential to preserve the original characteristics of the piece.
